For anophthalmia (from the greek ανόφθαλμος without eye) refers to pathology in the complete absence of one or both eyeballs, due to their lack of training during the period of gestation. The frequency of this malformation is approximately one case per 100,000 births and the cause is in at least two thirds of the cases of genetic nature, but has not yet been accurately identified the gene responsible.
With the same term is indicated in zoology the lack of visual organs as evolutionary adaptation to lack of ambient light by a species.
